Etihad Expands Free Stopover Program to Al Ain, Adding Desert Destination to Transit Route

Etihad Airways has added Al Ain Region to its complimentary stopover programme, extending a transit hospitality service that launched in 2024 and has, by the airline’s own account, already generated strong demand and booking volumes since its introduction.

The expansion, delivered in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), gives passengers connecting through Zayed International Airport a second destination option for their free one or two-night hotel stay. Travellers can now choose between Abu Dhabi City and Al Ain Region when booking a layover break en route to or from their final destination.

Operationally, the two pathways serve different traveller profiles. Abu Dhabi City offers a coastal, culture and entertainment-focused experience. Al Ain Region, by contrast, is built around heritage, nature and wellness, anchored by UNESCO-listed sites including Al Ain Oasis, Al Ain Museum, Qasr Al Muwaiji and Al Jahili Fort, as well as the natural landmark of Jebel Hafit. DCT Abu Dhabi describes it as a slower-paced counterpoint to Abu Dhabi’s urban infrastructure.

The logistics are straightforward. Complimentary shuttle transfers run between Zayed International Airport and Al Ain Region as part of the booking arrangement. Passengers who book through etihad.com or select travel agents can choose from four participating hotels: Four Points by Sheraton Al Ain, Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort Al Ain, Al Ain Rotana and Danat Al Ain Resort, with no additional room charges applied.

Aysha Al Kaabi, VP Commercial Enablement and Engagement at Etihad Airways, pointed to the programme’s core value proposition: eligible travellers receive a complimentary break at no extra cost, turning a transit stop into what the airline frames as a bonus holiday experience. The stopover pass, which doubles as Etihad’s boarding pass, also carries discounts on attractions and dining across both destinations.

Meanwhile, a coverage layer added in June 2026 extends the programme’s practical reach. Both Abu Dhabi and Al Ain stopover passengers now receive complimentary medical travel insurance, underwritten by The National Insurance Company Daman, automatically applied to eligible international visitors on Etihad-operated flights for up to 15 days, with no application process required.

The timing of the Al Ain expansion is not incidental. The region holds the title of Capital of Gulf Tourism for 2025 and carries the designation of Capital of Arab Tourism for 2026, a recognition awarded by the Arab Ministerial Council for Tourism at its 28th session in Baghdad in December 2025. Haitham Ali Khamis, Acting Director of Tourism Products Development at DCT Abu Dhabi, described the expansion as enabling visitors to discover “another side of the emirate” while extending their stay, positioning Al Ain not as a substitute for Abu Dhabi City but as a distinct alternative within the broader stopover framework.
