Editorial Standards — Rimal Wire
Rimal Wire serves readers across the United Arab Emirates with independent, public‑interest journalism. Our work is guided by clear editorial standards: accuracy, transparency, fairness and accountability. These principles shape how we gather, verify and present information so readers can trust what we publish.
Accuracy and verification
We verify facts before publication. Reporters and editors must seek corroboration from records, documents, public filings, and independent sources when available. Headlines, captions and summaries must accurately reflect the reporting. When we present analysis, we separate fact from interpretation and make the underlying basis of key claims clear.
We rely on primary sources whenever possible. When reporting relies on translation or interpretation, we disclose that and note the translator or interpreter’s role.
Sourcing and attribution
We name our sources whenever it is safe and practical to do so. Attributions should be specific—e.g., “a Ministry official” is preferable to “sources said” when the attribution can reasonably be made without endangering a source or compromising ongoing reporting.
We do not pay for newsworthy information. Payments may be permitted only for demonstrable expenses (translation, document fees) and must be approved by an editor and disclosed when relevant to the story.
Use of anonymous sources
Anonymous sourcing is an exception, not the rule. We may grant anonymity only when: - the source faces real risk of retaliation, legal jeopardy or physical harm; or - the information is in the public interest and cannot be obtained by other means.
Every use of an anonymous source requires editorial approval and corroboration by independent evidence or additional sources. When we rely on anonymous sources we explain, as fully as possible without endangering the source, the reason for anonymity and the steps taken to verify the information.
Conflicts of interest
Journalists must avoid conflicts of interest and disclose relevant relationships that could influence coverage. That includes financial ties, close personal relationships and outside employment. Editors assign or reassign coverage when a potential conflict arises.
We label sponsored content, native advertising and paid promotions clearly and distinctly so readers can tell them apart from news coverage. Staff may not accept gifts, trips or payments from people or organizations they cover unless approved in advance by an editor and disclosed to readers where appropriate.
Separation of news and opinion
News reporting and opinion are kept strictly separate. News articles present verified facts and multiple perspectives. Opinion pieces express analysis, argument or viewpoint and are labeled as Opinion, Column, or Analysis, with bylines and, where appropriate, disclosures of affiliations. Our editorial board and columnists operate under distinct standards—op-eds are selected on the basis of merit, and diverse viewpoints are sought.
Fairness, privacy and treatment of subjects
We seek comment from people and organizations before publishing criticism or allegations about them, when practicable and not detrimental to public interest reporting. We take care when reporting on vulnerable people and minors, respecting privacy and legal protections. We avoid gratuitous detail that serves no news value and could cause harm.
Images, video and social media
Visual material must be authentic and accurately captioned. Manipulation that misleads readers is prohibited. When using user‑generated content from social media, we verify provenance and context to the extent possible and disclose limitations.
Corrections and accountability
We correct significant errors promptly and transparently. Corrections are clearly labeled and appended to the story when feasible, and a record of substantive corrections is maintained and accessible. If you believe we have erred or fallen short of these standards, please contact our editorial team at [email protected] or submit a concern through our /contact/ form. We review and respond to editorial complaints in a timely manner and publish our findings when appropriate.
