Frieze Abu Dhabi Sets Delivery Plan: November Run at Manarat Al Saadiyat With 80-Plus Exhi

Frieze Abu Dhabi’s operational blueprint is set: the fair runs November 19 to 22 at Manarat Al Saadiyat, the cultural venue on Saadiyat Island, an arts hub still taking shape in Abu Dhabi. Organized jointly by Frieze and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism, the inaugural edition will host more than 80 exhibitors from 36 countries. That’s the scale of the delivery task facing organizers before doors open.

The exhibitor roster blends regional galleries with international operators. UAE-based Carbon 12, The Third Line, and Lawrie Shabibi will participate alongside ATHR Gallery and Hafez Gallery from Saudi Arabia, Tehran’s Dastan Gallery, Tunisia’s Elmarsa Gallery and Selma Feriani, and India’s Jhaveri Contemporary, Nature Morte, and Project 88. Each brings its own logistics, shipping, staffing, installation, into a single four-day window.

Delivery of the program breaks into distinct components, each run by a separate team. The centerpiece is Lebanese artist Dala Nasser’s work, selected by curator Nabil Abdel Nabi as the first recipient of the Frieze Abu Dhabi Artist Award. That award funds a new commission from Nasser plus a presentation of her site-responsive installation Qubbat Duris, named for a 13th-century monument near Baalbek that reflects the layered history of Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. Turning that reference into a built installation on-site is its own execution challenge.

A second strand runs in parallel. The flagship annual exhibition “In Dialogue” pairs an established artist with an emerging one from the UAE. This edition, titled “At Another Meeting Point,” is curated by Dirwaza Curatorial Lab, an Abu Dhabi-based incubator, and features Emirati artists Mohammed Kazem and Alia Zaal. Two curatorial teams, two commissioning processes, one shared deadline.

The build-out doesn’t stop at the fair’s walls. Logistics extend to the waterfront, where a sculpture showcase will be installed at Mamsha Beach on Saadiyat Island, following the pattern set by other Frieze editions elsewhere. Frieze Sculpture Abu Dhabi will feature Zeinab Alhashemi’s The Nut and Bolt alongside works by Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, Imran Qureshi, and Kamran Samimi, each requiring outdoor installation ahead of the November dates. A talks program, running concurrently with the fair, will bring together artists, curators, historians, and patrons, adding a scheduling layer on top of the physical build.

Fair director Dyala Nusseibeh framed the program as a response to context rather than a standalone product. “Frieze Abu Dhabi takes shape within a rich and evolving cultural landscape, and the programme for our first edition responds to that context,” she said in a statement. “Spanning generations and geographies, it reflects the artistic histories, ideas and practices that connect Abu Dhabi to a wider scene.”

What’s left now is execution. The venue is secured, the exhibitor list confirmed, the commissions and public programming defined. What remains untested is whether the installation timelines, the sculpture placements at Mamsha Beach, the shipping schedules for galleries arriving from Tunisia, Iran, India and Saudi Arabia, all converge on schedule. November is the date by which the full program, on paper complete, has to actually be standing, wired, and open to the public.
