e& UAE has begun rolling out a dense wavelength division multiplexing network across the Middle East, deploying next-generation optical and software infrastructure supplied by Ciena. The operator announced the buildout Wednesday, citing accelerating capacity demands from hyperscale cloud operators, AI-focused infrastructure providers, and data centre operators requiring expanded bandwidth.
At the core of the deployment are Ciena’s Reconfigurable Line System and Waveserver platform, both equipped with WaveLogic 6 Extreme coherent optics capable of delivering 1.6 terabits per second throughput. Alongside the optical hardware, e& UAE is implementing Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite to provide end-to-end network visibility and automated management across the DWDM infrastructure.
The architecture is engineered to deliver substantially increased capacity across the region and beyond. e& UAE Chief Technology Officer Marwan Bin Shakar framed the deployment as the operational foundation the operator needs to support the next generation of digital services. “This new DWDM network represents a significant step forward in the capacity and scalability of our infrastructure, helping the region respond to rapidly growing bandwidth demand,” Bin Shakar said.
The buildout specifically targets infrastructure requirements emerging from cloud services expansion, data centre interconnection, and future digital applications demanding elevated bandwidth. Bin Shakar emphasized that the network enables e& UAE to power digital growth with greater scalability and ultra-high-capacity performance, establishing the technical foundation for upcoming demands across advanced digital services.
What the deployment adds on the software side is equally consequential. The Navigator Network Control Suite brings operational automation and real-time visibility to the expanded network, enabling e& UAE to manage rising traffic volumes efficiently without proportional increases in operational overhead. That capability matters as traffic patterns shift and AI-intensive workloads place irregular, high-burst demands on backbone infrastructure.
Brodie Gage, senior vice president and chief product and technology officer at Ciena, described the Middle East as experiencing a surge in bandwidth demand driven by rapid expansion of advanced digital applications. “It’s clear that e& UAE’s next-generation network will transform the region and help position the company to stay ahead of today’s and tomorrow’s evolving digital requirements,” Gage said.
The rollout reflects a broader carrier trend of building optical infrastructure capable of supporting both current hyperscale cloud operations and anticipated future demand from AI-intensive workloads. WaveLogic 6 Extreme coherent optics are designed to deliver future-ready capacity without requiring wholesale infrastructure replacement as traffic patterns evolve, a practical consideration for operators committing capital now against uncertain demand curves.
For e& UAE, the DWDM expansion positions the operator to serve a growing regional ecosystem of cloud providers, data centre operators, and technology companies dependent on high-capacity backbone connectivity. The open question is how quickly that ecosystem scales, and whether the capacity headroom built into the current deployment proves sufficient as AI workload infrastructure in the region continues to expand.
